This book takes place in The Great Depression, 1936, in Flint, Michigan. Bud's mother died when Bud was 6. He moves from foster home to foster home, all of them abusing him. So, he sets foot on his own, using clues from his mother to find his father that he never knew. All alone. He wants to travel states away, to California, where he believes his father is. The problem is, he can only walk by foot. In his mind, he's a fugitive. He gets a ride with a kind man (Bud lies well...LOL! He lies in half the book!) and he takes him to someone. That someone is not his father. But he does find a something, even greater than his father.

The title comes from something his mother once told him, "Bud, don't let anyone call you Buddy. That's a name for a friend. And, if they're calling you Buddy, they're are not your friend."

This book was wonderful. The author, Christopher Paul Curtis, bases 2 main characters on his grandfathers. Once, Earl "Lefty" Lewis, was a baseball player. He's the one that gave Bud the ride to California. He lives there, anyway.

The other is Herman E. Calloway. He was in a band (in real life and in the book) called the "Dusky Devastators of the Depression!!!!!!" The band changes its name, a lot. I'm not going to tell you who he is in the book.

It's a wonderful book!
